Two officers who died not buckled up during pursuits St. Louis Globe-Democrat
Two St. Louis police officers who have died in traffic accidents stemming from police pursuits were not wearing seat belts, despite a department policy that mandates that they be worn.
St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom said Wednesday that officers David Haynes and Julius Moore were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. “Based on what we know right now, yes,” Isom said.
Haynes, 27, was killed in a crash March 24, while pursuing a burglary suspect in south St. Louis. His patrol car was struck from both sides as he went through an intersection at Kingshighway Boulevard and Oleatha Avenue.
Moore, 23, died of injuries he sustained last October when his patrol car was hit by a tractor-trailer while responding to a call.
Isom talked about seat belts in outlining the department’s pursuit policy at the St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners meeting. But he didn’t say if either officer violated the department’s pursuit policies. The Haynes accident is still under investigation.
